Podcasts

Podcasts will cause me to fail out of Law School.

Well, they'll at least contribute significantly to it.

Last summer I got an iPod, a nice little 1GB Nano. I quickly filled it up and thoroughly enjoyed it, until it got stolen. My regular reader (hi Mom) might recall my Ode. Anyhow, I replaced my Nano with a new Nano, this one an 8GB. It wasn’t long before I realized that the 8GB is about 6GB more than I need, then I found podcasts.

At first, I searched iTunes for podcasts on cigars. To my surprise there were several, I tried most of them. Then I searched for music I wanted to learn more about. Bam, four or five more. Then news, then commentary, then politics, then….

I now have well over a dozen that I subscribe to and many more I’m trying out. And for me it’s not enough to just subscribe, no, I have to listen to the last 10-15 episodes to make sure I’ll like it. I have hours and hours to listen to (maybe even days) and the sad thing is that I actually look forward to listening to them throughout the day. It won’t be long before I’m planning my day around them.

Journal/class/seminar/clinic/student org./volunteer work/paid work/family time be damned, I have to catch up on my podcasts!

I’ve never been more thankful that I didn’t get the 30GB iPod Video.

Spring Cleaning

I updated the links on the blog. I’ve kept it to UT blawgs because that’s the bulk of what I read. I’ve taken down the ones who seem to have stopped updating. I don’t know if it’s cavalier to remove a blog whose most recent post is “resuming the blog” or not. I hope I’ve not mis-juddged them.

Law School won’t have me to push around anymore.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve had numerous conversations with other 2- and 3-Ls about what law school has done to them physically. Most have talked about weight gain or loss, hair loss or discoloration, hives during finals, even wrinkles. None of these comments were limited to men or women, all complained of the same things in equal numbers. I won’t go into detail about who said what, or even what I complained about.

All I have to say at this point is that I refuse to let Law School take its toll on me physically anymore. That’s right, Law School, this may require drastic steps, but you won’t have Ex.Coll. to push around anymore.

Why did we have class yesterday?

Did anyone forget the fact it was President’s day? How else are we supposed to recognize the invaluable contributions of such great Americans as Rutherford B. Hayes, Franklin Pierce, and Warren G. Harding?

I can’t believe I almost forgot William Henry Harrison.

Beware the wrath of my blog

I’m not saying that it was the missing promised breakfast. Nor am I saying it was the near weekly hits I got from the nice folks at Westlaw. For whatever reason, We have a new Westlaw rep.

A little piece of advice to you, Ms. Boase, don’t promise free breakfast if you can’t deliver.

You better look out, George’s CafĂ©.

Happy (belated) Birthday to Me

I actually forgot my own birthday. Yes, it was one long year ago, I started this blog. I’m not sure what I hoped to accomplish by starting it, probably just a way to spend some time not thinking too seriously about the law. If that was the goal, Mission Accomplished.

Nostalgia…

Happy VD

I hope that everyone out there has a happy V.D.
That’s Valentine’s Day. I hope you wouldn’t think I was wishing ill will on anyone.

Summer Employment

A lot of 1Ls worked very hard to get their resumes out on December 1. Now it’s time for the cold had truth, if you haven’t heard by now… well, you know the rest.

But, have no fear, Ex.Coll. is here to help you out. As a public service, I am offering three very firm job leads. Why? Because, last year I was in the exact same situation. It sucks being unemployed with no serious prospect of employment. These leads have proven very fruitful to me and to many others. It seems that these employers always have an endless need for summer law school associates. The pay isn’t all that great, but you will learn an enormous amount. Good Luck!

In Poor Taste

Any regular reader of this blog knows I keep this a very classy place in the internet. I have never been one to make jokes in poor taste or that may be considered offensive. However, with the death of Anna Nicole Smith, it’s hard to maintain that standard. So I’ve come up with this.

I think it’s pretty certain that she died of some sort of overdose; the only question is overdose of what. This would make it interesting to sell “squares” to guess what it was. Since there are probably dozens of drugs that she could have been taking we would have to go based on the two that were found in the highest quantities. This would be just like selling football squares. If she died of a Heroin/ anti-depressant combination, whoever had the “heroin anti-depressant square would win. In the rare event that she died of natural causes, the “other other” square would win.

DISCLAIMER: This is just my sick attempt at humor. I am NOT selling squares. I do NOT condone the selling of squares to prosper on the death of a human being. I am not a bookie.

UPDADE: "Sources tell CBS 2's Scott Weinberger that investigators found illegal narcotics as well as prescription medications in Anna Nicole's Florida hotel room."

a long, long, long, long, long, long semester ahead

Last semester, by most measures, was a pretty shitty semester for me. By the end of the semester, I was beat physically, mentally, and emotionally; even my health was bad. One thing that got me through was the thought of this semester. I remember even telling people I was looking forward to the Spring, I was going to have good classes, classes I wanted, and with only one final and a total of 9 pass/fail hours, I thought this was going to be a pretty cushy schedule. I even have Fridays off and only two days with only one class meeting.

I was wrong. I was very, very wrong.

It is now the beginning of February, not even a month into this semester, and I feel like it’s late March. I’m struggling to just keep with the in-class readings and have done virtually none of the required outside research. I have deadlines rapidly approaching and little hope of accomplishing them without a minor miracle.

What the Hell was I thinking?

This may be the semester I abandon my strict “No law work on the weekend. Period.” rule.

Isn’t it a bit early?

I went to the men’s room in the library. In one of the stalls I hear some guy typing away on his laptop while on the can. Come on now, it’s barely February. If you are that time crunched now, I can only imagine what you’ll be like in late April.
