It’s over

Aside from the spam campaigning, I am quite disappointed in this year’s SBA Elections. Where was the drama? The conflict? The name calling? The accusations? The irregularities? Come on people, you’re going to be lawyers!

And so ends another SBA campaign season, not with a bang, but with a whimper.

I forget what the winner’s platform was, though. Was it the “more booze,” “more parties,” or “more money for bar tabs?” Anyhow, I look forward to the longer recess and better food at Georges.

Tear

Alas, no candidate has sought my endorsement.
I wonder if it has anything to do with my previous post?
I think the fact that Jason Hassay hasn’t been endorsed is an endorsement in and of itself.

3.26.2007

It’s that time of year again.

Time for the Stupid Bar Association elections. It’s been a year since I first commented on this act of stupidity. (The link in the old post no longer works. If you have the current link, please post in the comments.) While the “controversies” have remained at bay (so far), my essential question remains: what’s the point?

Based on my rather cursory glance at the “platforms” in the Atrium, there have been no changes. Even the lone sober candidate is the same, Jason. For that alone, he is worth my vote. I guess I will do what I did last year, one vote and the rest blank, unless, of course, someone can explain to me why SBA is worth my effort.

Can anyone convince me that the SBA is worth the effort it takes for me to circle a name on a slip of paper?

On Cigars

Just what this world needs, another overpriced cigar.
I never figured out what the deal was behind Gurkha cigars. I’ve been smoking for over a decade now, and had never head of them until Cigars International started pumping them up. I’d heard most of them were dog rockets, but I’ve never tried one myself. Personally, I couldn’t get over the butt-ugly artwork on the band. I mean it looks like a fat guy wearing a fez cleaning his fingernails. I’m sure they make a fine cigar, but their higher-end stuff is just too pricy for me. If I’m going to pay $15+ for a cigar, I’m going to stick with a brand I know (e.g. Fuente). Anyhow, they are now releasing what is going to be the most expensive cigar ever manufactured. The Gurkha Black Dragon. What’s the price? $115,000 for a box of 100. That makes the $300 a pop Cuban Dom Perignons seem like a bargain.

Oh, and by the way, if you want a box, you better order now, they are limiting the production to only (?) 5 boxes.

NPR

I’ll put this out right now, I don’t like NPR. While some it does offer some entertaining bits from time to time, I find it far to boring to look for those gems anymore. On a side note, I once passed the national headquarters of NPR and I felt drowsy just looking at the building.

Anyhow, NPR recently had a show featuring former Daily Show actor and current Leno hack Mo Rocca, washed up comedic has-been Paula Poundstone, and current Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Stephen Breyer. W T F ? I’m disappointed that the good Justice wasn’t up on his Ozzy Osborne and David Bowie trivia.

My sources inside NPR have told me that Ruth Bader Ginsburg will be a guest co-host on Car Talk next week. No word on if she will be filling in for Click or Clack.

Schedule

Wow. I thought the offerings for this semester sucked. The courses offered for the fall are abysmal. The following professors won’t be teaching any upper-level courses: Anderson, Smith, Young, Dz, Rau, Reese, and Sokolo. There will also be no offerings of BA and only 1 PR. Con Law II also seems to be offering slim pickings, and I don’t mean this guy.

Booooo.

The cacti are multiplying!

What’s the deal on the 6th floor of the Tarlton? Before spring break, there was just the normal distribution of cacti sitting on the tables, you know, classing up the joint, now they’re everywhere. One table has about a dozen on it. There’s even on in a corral! Who knew cacti were so frisky?

Of course not

After all, registration doesn’t begin until next week.
Thanks Student Affairs, I appreciate it.

Student Affairs, maybe you wouldn't have to yell if you gave us more than a weekend to look over the schedule.

Bitterness

Just when I thought that I couldn’t get any more bitter.
I’m miles behind where I should be for my seminar. I’ve given up reading in one class entirely. My journal work was done half-assed, at best. I have a book that is overdue from the library. Another class is far more time intensive than I am giving it credit for. I’ve bombed a mid-term. I have no plan for turning this semester around. And the worst of it all – I don’t think I care.

Premonition

Have you even seen what you just know will be yourself in the future? While watching the new show, “Andy Barker, P.I.” I am fairly certain that should I decide to hang out a shingle, the first five minutes of the show will be exactly how my practice will be. Yup, right up to the part where the mystery client shows up. Click here to see what I mean.

Spring Break

Sorry for the lack of posting, but with spring break here, well… you know.

Shame

It is 1 a.m. on Friday and what am I doing? I’m watching PBS.
What am I watching on PBS? A special on Kenny Rogers.
I don’t give a damn what anybody says, Kenny Rogers is a good singer.

It reminds me of about 10 years ago (Shit! Was it really a decade ago) when I was a bartender. [begin flashback]
I worked at a bar that had karaoke twice a week. My first karaoke night I was told of a guy who came in and “dominated” the stage. I forget his name, so I’ll call him “John.” It wasn’t long before I realized that karaoke night was really “John Night.” I heard how he would sing at least one in four songs all night long. I though he must have some talent, after all, people were coming just to see him. I couldn’t wait to meet the guy. After the karaoke guy set up, John made his appearance.
He had to have been at least 75 years old.
As soon as he took the stage I realized that all the admiration I had sensed was really sarcasm and mocking. Thinking back, I feel a little bad, but know he loved the attention.
I will never forget the first song I heard John sing. (read the CAPS as far more yelling than singing)
LADY!!!
I’M YOUR KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR
[dramatic pause]
[continue pause]
[damn, this is dramatic]
AND I love you.
You have made me what I am AND
[pause]
I am yours.

Westlaw/Westgroup

Why don’t you ever post a comment?
Whoever you are at Westlaw, I’d really like for you to post. It may be confusing, but to leave a comment you click “snide remarks” below.
You come here several times a week, and about a half dozen times over the last couple days. You find my little corner of the web by searching such terms as “Westlaw sucks” and “I hate Westlaw,” yet you never comment. Why is that?

I wonder if the Lexis people troll law school blogs to this extent. Let’s try it out.
Lexis Sucks. Lexis, I hate you.
I really don’t, so calm down Knustrom, I still use your service.

From death comes good

If one good thing can come from the demise of Jenkens & Gilchrist it’s that we will never have to be subjected to this again.

3.05.2007

It’s facts that make cases worth reading

From a case alleging aggravated sexual assault: “She [Complainant] described how appellant ordered her to remove her clothes and dentures and then repeatedly assaulted her sexually.” Hampton v. State, 109 S.W.3d 437, 439 (Tex. Cr. App. 2003). Emphasis added by me.

Jenkens & Gilchrist – RIP

People really don’t mourn when a law firms dies, do they? They shouldn’t.

Wether or not this causes you to mourn, it looks like Jenkens & Gilchrist is getting ready to head to the big Court of Appeals in the sky (down below?). Sorry, Jenkens, it’s the court of last resort.

It’s not official yet, but there are reports, more reports, and more reports, that indicate it’s coming soon. Some reports even come from across the pond.

Despite all this, Vault still lists them as one of the best places to work (#17). It did mention a “downer” was the “recent bad press.” Not many ways you can spin the closing of offices and the exodus of lawyers into good press.

All I have to say is, one more down, too many more to go.

coup

Well maybe a coup is a bit of an overstatement, but something happened today. If you were there, you know what I’m talking about.
