To the owner/driver of the white Lexus with California plate “LAW GRL” I saw in the San Jacinto garage:
Why?
Sincerely,
Ex.Coll.

I really have never understood the reason behind personalized license plates. Sure, when I was 8 years old I thought it was pretty cool, but now, I just wonder why.
In my life, I’ve only known two or three people with personalized plates (excluding those who did it for business purposes, i.e. limo companies). One has his last name, as if his 1984 Riviera convertible or the 197? Trans-Am t-top wasn’t distinctive enough. The other attempted to spell out his favorite cigar brand. The second did it in an effort to get into cA.

I find the garage pretty depressing. What are 22 year olds doing driving luxury cars? Enormous diesel trucks, stupid bumper stickers, and bad driving abound. I got caught off once by a guy going the wrong way up one of the ramps in his Mercedes and had a "Hate my fellow law students" moment.
I always found it strange how some law students (I assume that the "LAW GRL" was not a prof) so thoroughly embrace the law as part of their identity. How did they define themselves before they went to law school?
I had a personalized plate once. I must admit that I would still have it if I still had that type of vehicle. It was "4x Ford". I suppose my answer to your question of why would be individualism. Yes your brother, your sister, you and me all have 4 wheel drive Ford pick-ups but mine is just a little bit different than yours. Best answer I can give you.
Don't forget, though, that some of the idiots in the garage are the music students as well. I've been cut off many times by someone with a tuba in the backseat.

Jennybelle, I didn't see a tuba in the back of LAW GRL's Lexus. Although I'm pretty sure I've seen plates that read something like "UT BRASS".
As for the 4X FORD plate, I honestly don't think I would have paid much attention to that, LAW GRL, on the other hand, I noticed.
I guess part of me just wonders why anyone would want to be known as LAWE GRL or even Law Girl. If I were in need of a lawyer, I think I would hesitate if I knew he or she was known as Law Girl or Law Boy.
Oh well, to each his (or her) own.
lol, i just noticed that lexus last week. we have a lot of that back in california. in fact, when the managing partner of the firm i worked at bought a new bentley, there was a firm-wide contest to come up with a vanity plate... the more obnoxious the better.
I saw a car downtown a while back with the license plate "RTFM" -- I agree with you about vanity plates in general, but I was willing to make an exception for that one.
